Are you using a different drive with your 128? Try hooking up the c64's 1541 to your 128 and see if there's a difference.

V-Max has a checksum for every sector and if the checksum doesn't match, it will attempt to load the sector again and again (10 times I believe). This tends to produce horrible noises as the head tracks back and forth between track 18 and the track that has the requested sector.
