I recently got a Commodore 128, along with a bunch of disks, and I noticed that I have a couple originals that you do not appear to have archived. I would love to get them archived, but unfortunately, my computer doesn't have a parallel port! What should I do? By the way, the disks I have are: Overlord (Virgin/Mastertronic, NTSC) Commodore 128 Demo Disk (Commodore, NTSC) (You might not be interested in C128 software, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.) I'd appreciate any help you could give me to get these preserved! Thanks. |

I could offer to archive overlord with nibtools using the parallel port on my drive if we could get in contact and you could post them to me in the mail, I live in Melbourne Australia. Unfortunately, you need a parallel port on your drive if you want to archive with nibtools, sorry, but there's no way around it. |

That might not be necessary, actually. I found on Amazon that you can actually buy Parallel Ports for PC. Hopefully, I can get one, get a cable, and do this myself after all! Still, thanks for the offer, hyper active. :) |

Hi Arjak, PCI parallel ports won't generally work with OpenCBM, etc. as they don't pass IRQ. You have to add a parallel port to your 1541, not your PC. The PC side can be done with a ZoomFloppy (USB). So you need a ZoomFloppy and parallel addon for 1541. If you have a 1571, you don't need any parallel at all, since it can use fast serial (SRQ) now. |

Oh, well, my PC has plenty of USB ports, and I just so happen to be using a 1571! So, all I need to do is get a ZoomFloppy cable, and the PC and 1571 will plug together, right? |

Correct- parallel port on the drive and PC is not necessary with ZoomFloppy and 1571. All you need is Zoom and a regular CBM serial cable. |

I don't think so. You'd have to design a circuit to disconnect the some of the drive lines from the 128 portion of the system. I doubt any pokes can do that (they've never worked for me). |

This allows transferring out bits as the drive head reads them. To use the old X-style cables, you need a printer port (LPT) on your PC's motherboard. This is because it is fast enough to read the bits streaming back. However, add-on PCI printer cards are not fast enough and will miss data. Nowadays, USB is plenty fast and you no longer need a printer port on the PC if you get a ZoomFloppy. The ZF has the added advantage with the 1571 of using the drive's special fast serial mode, which means you don't even need a parallel port in the drive. The X-cables can't use this mode. So that is the best combo if you want simple and easy imaging -- ZoomFloppy + 1571. |

Pete, So Nibread running with Zoomfloppy currently supports fast serial? That is good news. I think it is now time for me to upgrade from my XAP1541. I have held off on the parallel mod to my 1571 due to the risk of destroying the drive when pulling and reinserting chips. |

Yes, it works fine. Just a ZF+1571 is supported. It still has some timeout issues that are being worked on, but they are rare. |

My ZoomFloppy has arrived. I've installed the drivers, tested and gotten a signal from my drive, but when I started up nibread as so: nibread overlord.nib I get the following error: Failed port transfer test. Check cabling. Floppy drive initialization failed What should I do? It seems to be searching for a parallel port connection, even though I'm hooked up through USB. |

Never mind, I figured it out! I had to use the "-s" option! I now have two games to send in: Overlord (American version of Supremacy), and Risk. How should I send them in? |

I just bought some brand new, still shrink-wrapped C64 games off eBay. Some of these games do NOT have verified copies in the database! I'll archive them first thing when they start arriving. *Crosses fingers and hopes the disks still work!* |
